Preparing your heart for Easter—Session #5, March 2, 2009
Jesus Arrested Matthew 26: 47-56 (See also: John 18:1-11 and Luke 22:47-53)
*OVERVIEW QUESTION: As we read and discuss, keep notes on what details show the MAJESTY of Jesus and what details illustrate the MEEKNESS of Jesus.
1. What additional information does John’s Gospel provide?
2. In John, why do you think the soldiers fell back? (See Ex 3:14) Also, how does this relate to Psalm 27:1-2?
3. Why did Jesus ask them to let his disciples go free? Why did they not arrest Peter?
4. What further information about the arrest do we find out from Luke?
5. What types of leaders are in the attacking group? Is that surprising?
6. How many soldiers are in a “legion”?
7. Comment on Judas giving Jesus a kiss. Why does he need to? What does a kiss mean?
8. Then “they bound him.” What a laugh! What “cord” really bound him?
9. What kind of a CUP is this Jesus is accepting? What other cups are mentioned in the
Bible? Psalm 116:13: The Cup of _____________; In Jeremiah 16: 7: The Cup of
____________; Psalm 23:5 This cup is the cup of ________________.
Psalm 11: 6 is a wine cup of ________________.
Note: Annas had been their high priest , but Caiaphas was the one Romans accepted. So, for religious reasons, Annas was the one they went to first. Notice that at this point the PEOPLE still accepted Jesus; the RELIGIOUS leaders did not and wanted him killed.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin Matt. 26: 48-68
10. What is ironic about Caiaphas’ identity?
11. Jesus does not answer at first; then he does when again asked who he is. Why?
12. The priests are “concerned” about Jesus breaking the Mosiac Law, but THEY are breaking the Mosiac Law in several respects! What are some?

Session #4 Matthew 26
Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus; Verses: 14-16
1) How did the offer come about? Did they tempt Judas?
What exactly WAS Judas offering or what dilemma did he solve for the priests?
3) Read Psalm 41:9. How is this verse related?
4) Could they charge Jesus with anything criminal?
5) What do you think made Judas want money? (Did he lack money?)
6) Are 30 pieces of silver prophesied? (Matt. 27:9-10; Zec.11:13; Ex. 21:32)
Though we will avoid drawing a definite conclusion (because no one can be sure), what POSSIBLE reasons might Judas have for betraying Jesus?
The Lord’s Supper; Verses 17-30 One of the Spring Festivals was Passover (Ex. 12:3, 6 for history; Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper (I Cor. 5:7-8); See also I Peter 1:18-19.
8) Verse 28: What is a “covenant” and how is this a newly instituted one?
9) Verse 29: When will Jesus “drink it anew with” us? Is the occasion significant?
10) Verse 30: Jesus and his disciples sung a hymn! What was it? (See Psalm 118)
What phrases from Psalm 118 are especially meaningful if sung by Jesus?
In John, let’s look at what questions various disciples asked Jesus at the Last Supper.

Lenten History A little more information about Lent, the preparation period before Easter--What exactly is the significance of Lent? “Lenten” comes from the word for “lengthen” referring to the lengthening spring days. In the second century the purpose of setting aside 40 days before Easter was to educate people in the faith. These people would then be baptized on Easter Sunday! Forty seems a likely number—it was 40 days that Jesus prepared for his spiritual journey. So, we, too, can have 40 days to prepare for Easter. Did you decide to start any traditions?
Session #3: Matthew 25: 31-46 “Whatever you do…”
This seems to refer to Jesus’ return after the tribulation (some disagree) since then the first order of business will be the judgment of the nations, in which it will be determined which of those people who have survived the Great Tribulation will be allowed to enter into the kingdom age.
1) What is the message of these verses?
How is the message similar to James 2:16?
Do these verses mean that visiting a prisoner earns us a place in heaven? Explain.
To whom are the “brothers” referred to in verses 40 and 45? (See Matt. 12:46)
(Verse 46) “Gehenna” (eternal punishment) was prepared for whom?
How are these verses advice both in the positive and negative sense?
What comments do you have about these verses?
Matthew 25: 1-13 “Anointed” (See also, John 12: 1-8) Some claim these are two separate events. We will treat them as one for study purposes.
8) What is this perfume? How is it used? Where does it originate?
Matthew does not identify the woman. John does. Who is she?
What would using her let-down hair indicate in that culture?
She takes time to bless Jesus; time in lavishing anointing Jesus with love. How could we?
What details are different in the two accounts? How could these details be reconciled?
How does Jesus “stand up” for the woman? What would his modern words be?
Do you think the woman KNEW Jesus would die soon? Explain.
What is the main message of this story FOR YOU?
What would you like Jesus to say about you? How could that happen? What verse would you like to memorize? What you could apply to your life today?

“Special Delivery” I understood the exclamation point at the end of the movie entitled: You've Got Mail! It is exciting to receive mail. The little pinging announcement that I have new e-mail is music to my ears. I’m eager to click on the new mail to read what someone wrote to me. If people don’t ignore their e-mail or a snail-mail letter from a person, why do we let dust collect on God’s “love letters,” the Bible? Perhaps we don’t realize that God will really speak to our hearts when we read what He has to say to us. Also, maybe we don’t really believe God wrote the Bible to us. We may think that the Bible is true, but not pointedly directed at each of us individually. However, we can learn, benefit, and know God better from what He has termed His “living word.” In other words, the Bible is God’s love letter to you! What helped me to enjoy studying the Bible more was to realize that God is just waiting for me every day to go spend time with Him. Would you want a friend who never called you or cared to spend time reading your letters so as to know what you had to say? So what kind of friend are you being to God? John 5:13: “I write these things to YOU who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” Pinging bell or not, you do have mail! Check it out–it’s from the lover of your soul!
